FC Irlande’s Ladies 1 had a tough away-game ahead with the opportunity to gain 9 points out of 9 in the last three games.
The game started with a bit of confusion on the pitch from the girls in green as they tried to adapt to the opposition’s style of play. R.C.S. Sart Tilman demonstrated good control in the midfield which proved to be a challenge for Irlande to breakthrough. Half way through the first half, Sart Tilman played outside to their winger who managed to break through the defence and score the opener of the game. This could have changed the mentality of the game, however it had the opposite effect. Ireland stepped up and really pushed for an equaliser. Shortly after Rebecca Hellgren crossed the ball into the box and Juliane Pieper met the ball with a beautiful header which set the score at 1-1. Not long after, Juliane Pieper found the back of the net a second time which led to FC Irlande coming out on top in the first half (1-2).
The second half remained controlled from both teams, with Irlande continuing to have threatening chances in the Sart Tilman box. In the 71st minute, a penalty was given to FC Irlande after a handball. Sabrina Morales stepped up and converted the penalty leading to the score being a comfortable 3-1. After this goal, it seemed that the ladies in green became a bit too relaxed in the back whilst Sart Tilman brought on one of their strongest players in attack. At this point Sart Tilman had nothing to loose and seemed very threatening with one goal being disallowed due to it being a foul on the goalkeeper Clara Groenbech-Jensen. However, this didn’t stop them as they managed to score one last goal in the 81st minute leading to the score being 2-3. Those last 10 minutes were very stressful to say the least but Irlande managed to hold on and come away with a victory in Liège.
We’ve seen a positive change in this team since the new year. Here’s to hoping they can keep this winning streak alive!
