The day didn’t start off well, waking up to absolutely turgid weather and a message from Jamie saying he had a stomach bug and wouldn’t be able to play. Nevertheless 12 guys admirably showed up to brave the weather and get stuck in for a gritty fight with Matteo set to play in his favoured position up front. Needless to say, the game did not pan out that way. From the first minute the boys in green got their foot on the ball and played some wonderful stuff combining very well between all the lines and running Vetuso ragged. After a lot of pressure from our boys the ball out wide to Jaret had him cut in and find Papi, who, after a couple bobbles, took control of the ball and with a half volley on the half turn on his left foot smashed a worldie into the far left corner. Shortly after, a small error in midfield gifted the ball to the opposition right wing, who took full advantage, and slammed a worldie of his own into the left corner from 20 metres. But the boys didn’t let up. We were far superior even against the wind and after some more wonderful build-up the ball found itself in the opposition box and Matteo won the first header, which found it’s way to Nick who then headed over the keeper’s head nestling the ball under the crossbar. 2-1 HT
Second half more of the same from the lads, controlling possession, looking short, playing simple football around the opposition it was only a matter of time. After lots of good pressure it finally came as once again the ball played through the lines beautifully, Ewan got the turn in space, brought it forward and layed it off to Pap who once again finished with composure with his left foot through the keepers legs this time. Cruising. Unfortunately the ref then decided that a perfectly timed tackle was a foul and gave a penalty completely against the run of play. 3-2. Not to be denied though the lads bucked up, kept playing beautiful football and eventually drew a foul on the right hang side which Nick then sent into the box but aiming for the far post. With a couple well timed ducks the ball made its way through the whole crowd and nestled into the far corner. 4-2
The last 10-15 minutes were not as pretty but the defence, as it had done all game long, stood firm and kept the opponent at bay.
A great win on a grimmy day. Very proud day for the captains with the level of football played 💚
MOTM Papi with an all-action performance from midfield capped by two beautiful goals wonderfully celebrated
